Comparative Study for the Measurement of Urine Specific Gravity

Abstract
A study was carried out to compare a new reagent strip test for the measurement of urine specific gravity with the traditional method of rafractometry and hydrometry.
The strip specific gravity result of 349 urine sample with Ames Multistix SG ere measured and compared with refractometer specific gravity result ana urinometer spcific gravity result.
The results were as follow;
1. Urine specific gravity by the reagent strip shows a singificant positive bias at acid urine but refractometry and urinometry are not changed.
2. Agreement of RSG=SSG¡¾0.005 was found in 76.8% and USG=SSG¡¾0.005 was found in 76.4% of the total samples.
The hight coincidence rate was 80.5% which show when urine pH was 6.0.
3. The correlation coefficient of SSG and RSG is 0.7543 and that of SSG and USG is 0.8258.
It was considered that this strip spcific gavity method does not provide accurate, clinical useful data and suggested that more evaluation must be performed for SSG as compare with traditional method.
